White Willow Bark- Gender: Feminine. Planet:Moon. Element: Water. Deities: Aino, Hera, Ceres, Hecate
The most common magickal use of the Willow is the making of Wands, for all of the Willow’s qualities are naturally contained within the wood, such as Protection, Divination, Magick, Inspiration, Flexibility, Fertility and Healing. You may wish to charge or empower certain aspects of the Willows qualities for the Wands specific uses. You can use a piece of fresh Willow cut from the tree with the appropriate reverence, ritual and thanks, or a newly fallen piece which the tree has recently dropped. It may have shed this piece just for you!
You can use the piece of fresh Willow as is, or strip the bark off and carve the wand with runic symbols, representing the use you wish to use the wand for. For carving, it is easier to carve fresh wood and then let it dry out. Small twigs will dry out quickly, without cracking in your house. For larger pieces of wood it is better to let them dry out slowly in a dark, cool, dry place. Once the wood is dry it can be polished with several layers of beeswax to protect the wood.
The White Willow Tree is considered to represent handcrafters, since it is one of the primary fibers used in basketry. Willows are also used to bind together witch’s brooms, and a forked willow branch is widely used in water dowsing.
