Orally, DMSO is used for the management of amyloidosis and related symptoms.
Topically, DMSO is used to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and acute musculoskeletal injuries. DMSO is also used topically to treat headache, inflammation, arthritis, tic douloureux, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal degeneration, bunions, calluses, fungus toenails, asthma, to flatten raised keloid scars, and for cancer. It is also used topically to prevent tissue necrosis after extravasation with antineoplastic agents, to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and amyloidosis. It is also used topically for reducing skin flap ischemia following surgery, complex regional pain syndromes, as a vehicle in combination with idoxuridine to decrease the development of inflammatory reactions and lesions associated with herpes zoster infection, and decrease the pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia.
Intravenously, DMSO is used to manage symptoms associated with secondary amyloidosis and to lower intracranial hypertension. DMSO is administered by intravesical instillation to treat symptoms of interstitial cystitis such as urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia and suprapubic pain. It is also used by intravesical instillation to treat symptoms associated with chronic inflammatory bladder disease. DMSO is infused alternately with methyl-tert-butyl ether and a buffer solution of EDTA and sodium deoxycholate through a nasobiliary catheter for the dissolution of bile duct stones. DMSO is used for the cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells to be infused and transplanted at a later date.
In manufacturing, DMSO is used as an industrial solvent for herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics, and plant hormones.
